Trainee train driver · Stage 1 and Stage 2

VSE task 1 — dot sequence

The dot steps round the corners one at a time. Mark every square where the sequence breaks — a skipped corner, a step back, or no move at all. Alternate runs go the other way round. Exam counts down from 3:00 and takes the paper away at zero; practice is untimed.

180 squares · 1 s a square · exam ends at 3:00 · 2 papers

VSE task 2 — letter columns

Mark each box where the two columns hold different letters. Order does not matter, and a letter can appear twice. Alternate runs use lookalike letters. Exam counts down from 3:12 — two seconds a box — and takes the paper away at zero; practice is untimed.

96 boxes · 2 s a box · exam ends at 3:12 · 2 papers

VSE task 3 — both at once

Four seconds a pair, auto-advancing, and it ends itself at the last pair. The dot sequence is the primary task. Forty-five pairs is the exam length and the only one that sets your best; practice runs fifteen at the same pace.

45 pairs · 4 s a pair · exam ends at 3:00 · 4 papers

Enhanced VSE 1 — the trackPlatinum

The enhanced version. A light steps round a track of round stops, following the arrows — seven track layouts, each run the next one, alternating clockwise and anticlockwise. Press FALSE when it skips a stop or lights the wrong colour. Once or twice a run it turns intense for 10 to 35 stops, called on screen as it comes in and goes: quicker, with two lights at once and a stop lit half in another colour.

120 stops · 1.5 s a stop · 1.2 s when intense · 7 tracks, both ways · practice is 30

Enhanced VSE 2 — shape setsPlatinum

Ten different shapes in set A and the same ten, in a different order, in set B beside it, dealt from a pool of twenty-one. Every few seconds two shapes light on each side. Is there a fault? Yes if the lit shapes differ, no if they are the same shapes. Once or twice a run it turns intense for 10 to 35 questions, called on screen as it comes in and goes: three lit on each side, and quicker.

120 questions · 3 s each · 2.5 s with 3 lit when intense · practice is 30

Enhanced VSE 3 — both togetherPlatinum

The track and the shape sets on one screen, on one clock: a step of the light every tick and a shape question every other tick. The intense spells, called as they come and go, land on both at once. Scores each against how you do on it alone.

120 points · 80 stops and 40 questions · about 2:00 · practice is 30

Group Bourdon — dot groups

Mark every group of exactly four dots, working left to right, line by line. A minute a part, changing whether or not you have finished, and it scores itself at the end of the last one. Errors count against you. Exam runs all five parts; practice runs two.

5 parts · 1 min each · exam ends at 5:00 · errors penalised

Tea-Occ — divided attentionGold

Count tones while ignoring a lower one, search a directory page, then do both at once. Needs sound. Scores what doing both costs you. Every part ends itself on the clock; practice runs the same three parts short.

3 parts · 1:15, 2:00, 1:30 · sound required

TRP1b — rules recallGold

Study a passage of procedure for three minutes, then it is taken away and you answer eighteen questions on it. Exam puts seven minutes on those questions and hands the paper in at zero; practice leaves them untimed so you see what you actually retained. Three passages, rotating.

18 questions · 3 min study · exam ends at 7:00 · 3 passages

TRP2 — order of checkingGold

Three dials, each with an arrow over a background that sets its priority. White first, black second, grey last — give the order. Exam is the real 43 in eight minutes and ends at zero; practice is seven with no clock.

43 questions · 11 s each · exam ends at 8:00 · practice is 7, untimed

DFFT — fault findingGold

Read a display panel against a fault finder guide, work out which fault to deal with first, and give its code and the action that goes with it. Exam is the real 20 in forty-five minutes and ends at zero; practice is five with no clock.

20 questions · 2:15 each · exam ends at 45:00 · practice is 5, untimed

WAFV — vigilanceGold

A grey square flashes. Respond the moment it appears darker than usual. Exam is the real thirty minutes and the only length that sets your best; practice is ten, which stops before the decline this test exists to find, and five is a check that the screen and your finger are working.

30 minutes · counts down · practice is 10, or 5 for a quick check

ATAVT — perceptionGold

A traffic scene flashes for one second. Report which objects you saw. Comes with twenty-eight tagged photographs; add your own and it uses those too. The real test uses photographs and they are harder than anything drawn. Exam is twenty scenes; practice is eight.

20 scenes · 1 s each · practice is 8 · 15 photographs included

2-Hand — co-ordinationGold

Left thumb moves it sideways, right thumb moves it up and down. Keep it inside the channel. A different channel shape each attempt. Exam is the ten runs the real test is set at; practice is six, which stops before the hands start to tire. A gamepad works too: left stick sideways, right stick up and down.

10 runs · practice is 6 · 5 tracks · buzzer on contact

M7-SJT — rankingGold

Put four responses in order of preference. 45 seconds a situation, auto-advancing. Four different sets, rotating, so a second run is never the same paper. Exam is the full eight situations; practice is three. The situations are set on the railway — depot, platform, cab and control.

8 situations · 45 s each · practice is 3 · 4 sets

SJE — ratingGold

Rate each response 1 to 5. Checks your answers against each other for contradictions. Exam is the twenty-one scenarios of the real exercise, drawn from all four sets; practice is one set of six. Untimed either way — the real one is too. The scenarios are set on the railway.

21 scenarios · untimed · practice is one set of 6

MMI — the interviewPlatinum

Write your six pre-interview form examples, then answer the interviewer's follow-ups out loud against the clock. Scores how much of the structure you actually covered, not what you said. Exam is all eight follow-ups; practice is three.

6 form examples · 8 questions · practice is 3 · 4 sets

Day modeGold

Every drill of the stage you are on, back to back in one sitting. Exam runs them all in their exam version and rehearses the fatigue, not just the tasks; practice runs the same order in their practice versions, for when you want to see what is coming.

runs whichever stage is selected · exam twice before the day
Run these on the largest screen you have. The real assessments are on a desktop with a keyboard, and a phone flatters your scores on the two visual search tasks.

Original exercises built to drill the same skills. Not the OPC or Vienna tests, and not affiliated with them — use alongside the licensed booklets you were sent, not instead of them.
